Miki Muster (1925 – 2018) completed his studies in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. About a year before finishing his studies, he got a job at the newspaper Slovenski poročevalec, which was later renamed Tedenska tribuna. Every week, he drew a one-page continuation of the comic strip about Zvitorepec, Trdonja and Lakotnik for the newspaper, for which he is best known to the general public. In 20 years of work, he created as many as 45 stories. In six years, he also drew 20 picture books for Slovenski poročevalec (later for Delo and Ljubljanski dnevnik), the most famous of which are Medvedek Neewa, Gozdni prijatelji, Lupinica and Lučka na severu.
Since he always wanted to create animated films, he made an advertisement for tights himself without a commission, which was so successful that others soon followed, e.g. for Viki krema, Zikcak bunnies, Jelovica, and Čunga Lunga chewing gum. Due to his desire to make cartoons for children, he went to Munich, where he created cartoons for Bavaria Film. In 17 years of work, he created an incredible ten hours of cartoons, while also drawing five to ten commercials for Ljubljana television each year and drawing comics for German clients.
After retiring and returning to Slovenia, he still worked on smaller projects with longer deadlines. During this period, he devoted himself to drawing political cartoons.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miki Muster, the Republic of Slovenia is issuing a commemorative coin depicting Muster’s comic characters, Trdonja, Zvitorepec and Lakotnik. The depictions clearly identify the characteristics of the characters, namely Trdonja’s stubbornness, Zvitorepec’s cunning and Lakotnik’s eternal hunger.
