Samoa 5 coin set (2011)

Coin set with spectacular boat race of the Samoan Islands Before the use of modern ships, fautasi boats were the main means of transport between the islands of Samoa. They are about 30 meters long. Big racing events with the boats still take place today and are of great cultural importance. The name fautasi literally means “built as one” and refers to the required teamwork of the crews of up to 50 people. A fautasi race is shown on the reverse of the 10 Sene coin of this complete set from 2011. It is Samoa’s first coin set under Tui Ātua Tupua Tamasese Efi as head of state. The remaining reverses feature the national flower known as “teuila”, the endemic tooth-billed pigeon, a kava bowl, and the national coat of arms.
