the Philippines After Ferdinand Magellan landed (and died) in the Philippines during his circumnavigation of the world in 1521, the islands became part of the Spanish colonial empire for over 300 years. However, revolutionary movements gave rise to many national heroes in the struggle for independence from Spain, and starting in 1898, from the United States. This coin set of the Philippine Peso pays tribute to some of them. The obverses depict portraits of José Rizal and Emilio Aguinaldo, as well as a double portrait of Andrés Bonifacio and Apolinario Mabini, in addition to the denominations.
