This 100-kina note commemorates Sir Julius Chan, who served as the prime minister of Papua New Guinea three times.
Obverse
The front of the K100 note retains the iconic image of Parliament, representing the sovereignty and identity of the nation. The national coat of arms of Papua New Guinea – a bird-of-paradise perched on a Kundu drum and a spear – also remains.
Reverse
Symbols of traditional trade accompany the portrait of Sir Julius – a toea armband, a kina breast ornament, a lakatoi, and a shark whistle, symbolizing Papua New Guinea’s history as a trading nation even before the introduction of modern currency.
