Front: François Duvalier (1907-1971). With help of the army and election fraud, he was elected president of Haiti in 1957 and declared himself president for life in 1964. His dictatorial regime oversaw military and governmental purges, mass executions, and the institution of curfews, all enforced by his personal and violent secret police.
