Front: General Justo Rufino Barrios (1835-1885), president of the republic (1873-1885) and promoter of Central American unity. Barrios instituted a number of reforms including freedom of the press. He oversaw substantial cleaning and rebuilding of Guatemala City, brought the first telegraph lines and railroads to the Republic and established a system of public schools. Back: A teaching scene.
