Coin set with the unique wildlife of the Falkland Islands The Falkland Islands are located in the South Atlantic off the coast of Argentina. They are a British Overseas Territory, but are also claimed by Argentina. Their arctic nature, characterized by fjords, barren rocks and moors, is particularly fascinating. Some of the native animals are depicted on the reverses of these coins: Gentoo penguins, a Magellan goose, a black-browed albatross, South American sea lions, a sheep and the Falkland Islands wolf, which has been extinct since 1876. Although the British Pound Sterling is the official currency, separate coins have been minted for the Falkland Islands since 1974.
