Eritrea since independence In 1991, the Eritrean War of Independence ended and after a referendum in 1993, the country finally gained its independence from Ethiopia. Eritrea’s currency, the Nakfa, is named after a town that played a crucial role in the war. This is the complete first coin set of the Nakfa. It consists of denominations of the Cent subunit. Interestingly, the highest denomination is also a 100 Cents coin, rather than the 1 Nakfa nominal. The obverses of the coins depict a red-fronted gazelle, a leopard, a North African ostrich, a Grevy’s zebra, a greater kudu, and an African elephant with calf.
