Plurinational State of Bolivia Both the country and the currency are named after the South American freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, who, besides Bolivia, also led Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Peru and Venezuela to independence from Spain. To honor Bolivia’s indigenous peoples and multi-ethnic identity, the official country name was changed to “Plurinational State of Bolivia” in 2009. This is the complete first coin set with the new name. The obverses depict the exceptional national coat of arms.
