Tonga 5 coin set (2015)

Complete first coin set of Tonga under King Tupou VI Due to the great distances between the South Pacific islands, seafaring has always been an important part of Polynesian cultures. Furthermore, the isolated location gave rise to unique animal and plant species. This complete coin set of the Tongan Pa’anga is dedicated to both. The reverses of the coins feature a Garcinia sessilis flower – Tonga’s national flower, used for typical Polynesian garlands –, two Tongan megapode birds, a Tongan double-hulled sailboat, Princess Lātūfuipeka Tukuʻaho performing the ceremonial Milolua dance to prepare a kava drink, and the national coat of arms. The obverse of the 1 Pa’anga coin is adorned by a portrait of former King Tupou V.
