The first European at the Pacific Ocean In 1513, Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475–1519) was the first European in history to cross the American continent and reach the Pacific Ocean. Panama’s currency is named after the Spanish conquistador. This complete coin set of the Panamanian Balboa is the first to contain a bimetallic coin. The denominations correspond to those of the U.S. Dollar and, unusually, are exclusively indicated in words on all coins. The reverses depict portraits of indigenous freedom fighter Urracá (c. 1490–1531), feminist Sara Sotillo Guillén (1900–1961), and Núñez de Balboa.
