equator Antonio José de Sucre (1795–1830) was a South American general who fought alongside Simón Bolívar for independence from Spanish colonial rule. He is revered as a national hero in several countries and served as the eponym for Ecuador’s currency. His portrait is featured on the reverse of the 1 Sucre coin of this complete set. The other reverses show the denominations, a banana tree, artifacts of pre- Columbian cultures and the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo – The Monument to the Equator – in Pichincha. Exceptionally, the denominations are also indicated in braille script.
