Despite Spanish claims to power, however, it became a British colony in 1862 and is today the only English-speaking country in Central America. The three Spanish ships Santa María, Niña and Pinta of Columbus’ famous first expedition are featured on the reverse of the 1 Dollar coin of this complete circulating coin set from Belize. Its obverse depicts the third Royal Mint portrait of former British Queen Elizabeth II. The others show a portrait of Elizabeth wearing the St Edward’s Crown.
